The line graph shows the percentage of New Zealand's population from 1950 to 2050. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph illustrates the proportion of people at four different age groups living in New Zealand over a century period starting from 1950.
In general, the initial impression from the chart is New Zealand had an aged population, as the oldest people will remain the largest population, with overall rises predicted for the number of teenagers and middle-aged people, as opposed to an anticipated decrease in 25-37 aged group over the surveyed period.
With approximately 60% of the total population, the elderly accounted for the largest numbers among four aged-group citizens, more than twice the figure for the second-largest group, people aged 38-45. In the subsequent 40 years, the former rose slightly to a peak at about 70%. Similarly, the latter showed a significant increase of a quarter percentage point, reaching its highest point at roughly 50% before dipping to 10% around 2000. Both figures are projected to decrease in the near future: by 2050, the number of people aged over 65 in New Zealand will have fallen to less than its initial level, and that for 38-45 group to only two-fifth.
It is notable that there was a major decline in the working population aged from 25 to 37. The people in this age group fell by a further one-tenth percent from 20% in 1950 to 10% in 2000 and is forecast to become the group with the lowest figure in 2050. Despite having the smallest population during the first four decades at 5%, people aged 0-14 witnessed a continuous rise in population and surpassed the former group in 2010. Its figure is expected to peak at 20% in 2050.
