The table illustrates the amount of forest area in six continents, namely Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America in 1990, 2000 and 2005.
Overall, Europe and Asia experienced upward trends during the period of time shown. In addition, Europe and South America accounted for the largest amount of forest land.
In Europe, standing at 989 millions of hectares in 1990, the number of forests witnessed an significant increase of 9 millions in 2000, and reached to 1001 in 2005. Regarding Asia, there was also an increase in the forested land from 576 in 1990 to 584 in 2005 after moderately declining to 570 in 2000.
By contrast, the opposite trend was true for the other continents. In 1990, the amount of forested space in South America was 946, compared with 749 in Africa and 708 in North America. Oceania was even by far the lowest with just 199. During the next 15 years, the forest area fell sharply to 904 in 2000 and just 882 2005. Similarly, the figure for Africa saw a decline of 40 in 2000, and ended the period with 691. The forested surrounding in North America and Oceania slightly went down to 705 and 197 respectively in 2005.
