• Task 1: The two bar charts below show the proportion of 14-16 year-old students studying a foreign language in an English speaking country, and the top three foreign languages. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The bar charts illustrate the percentage of male and female foreign language learners aged 14 to 16 in an English speaking country and the three most popular foreign languages in 1984 and 2007.
Overall, in both two years, the proportion of female learners overwhelmed that of male learners and French was the most prevalent language. Moreover, the figure for all categories of student and language followed a downward trend, except for Spanish.
It is substantial that nearly half of 14-16 year-old girls studied a foreign language in 1984 before falling to 40 percent in 2007. In addition, the figure for male students did not show any significant changes around 30 percent between 1984 and 2007.
Regarding the top three languages, there was a remarkable disparity that 50 percent of students studied French whereas only a quarter chose German in 1984. However, the percentage of French and German did not show that in 2004, with 25% and 15%, respectively. Interestingly, only Spanish gained more popularity in 2007 with 10 percent, twice as much as the figure in 1984.
