The bar chart illustrates the percentages of boys and girls who played nine popular sports in New Zealand in the year 2002.
It can be seen that both genders’ participation was fairly equal. However, their sporting preferences were far different.
In 2002, netball and swimming were the most two sports which gained popularity in girls, at one-fourth and 23% of girls played these sports, while this figures for boys were much lower, accounting for only 1% and 13% respectively. Likewise, there was a slightly higher proportion of girls than boys who liked doing athletics, at 4% of girls and 3% of boys.
In contrast, boys in New Zealand were interested in other sports which girls less took part in. The highest percentage of boys played soccer at almost 25% while just 5% of girls played it. other sports were played by approximate a quarter of boys but just one-tenth of girls. Meanwhile, the participation figure for boys in cricket was 10% while among girls, only 1% played it. Around 7 percent of boys basketball and tennis, these figures were fewer in girls, at just over 5%.
