The graph gives information about population rates in Japan divided to three age groups (0-14, 15-64 and 65+) from 1960 to 2040.
Overall, the proportions of those who are 15-64 tears old were significantly higher than those of the other two age groups and are expected to keep this trend in the future. Moreover, the figure for 0-14 category shows that this population rates are about to decline while the elderly proportion is predicted to increase.
The figures for 0-14 age group and 15-64 experienced quiet similar trends. The former initially stood on 65% while the latter accounted for less than a half (only 30%) in 1960. Both figures decreased steadily in the next 10 years by around 5% each. From 1970 there was a gradual decrease among 0-14 population. They were only 15% of total population by 2010, and this rate is expected to fall below 10% by 2040. The graph for 15-64 also decreased with some fluctuations and is likely to hit a low point at around 52% in 2030.
On the other hand, the figure for those who aged 65 and over was the lowest in 1960 and accounted for only 5%. Then it experienced a gradual growth and reached to around 25% bu 2010. According to future projections, this upward trend will continue and peak at around 35% by 2040.
