The graph illustrates the number of foreign visitor arrivals in global areas over a fifteen-year period from 1990 to 2005. Overall, the number of outbound tourists at different global areas followed the same rising pattern. Additionally, North America was the most visited region by international travellers, while Central and Eastern Europe received the second largest number of travellers.
As can be seen from the graph, in 1990, North America was the most popular destination, at 70 million, over double the tourist number of Central and Eastern Europe, at 30 million. South-East Asia welcomed the second biggest number of outbound tourists, at 20 million, whereas Sub-Saharan Africa and South America served virtually the same number of visitors, at 10 million.
During the period from 1990 to 2005, Central and Eastern Europe saw the biggest growth of roughly 200% to 90 million in the number of visitors, while the number of international tourists in North America and South-East Asia increased considerably to 90 and 50 million, respectively. Likewise, Sub-Saharan Africa and South America reported a slight rise in the visitor number to 25 and 20 million, respectively.
