It is contended that teenagers should participate in voluntary work as it is beneficial to both the individuals and the society. From my own perspective, I firmly agree with that idea, despite some criticisms aimed at its drawbacks.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that community service work has a range of shortcomings. Students are under considerable pressure due to the strenuous works at school and at home, and are left with extremely little amount of time for recreational activities. Without adequate rests, physical-demanding tasks will have a negative impact on their health and consequently their performances at school. In addition, the risk of teenagers injuring themselves or others is not minimal. There are cases which the volunteers had been confined to their bed for several weeks, interrupting their study severely.
On the other hand, the advocates, including me, raise arguments supporting the merits of communal activities. Firstly, by joining in such activities young people are making a contribution to their society, making their neighborhood a cleaner and better place for everyone. Secondly, experiences can be acquired in the process of working, which might be beneficial to your major or your future occupations. For instance, if you are learning engineering, a month in construction sites will provide you with valuable insights into different methods of erecting buildings. Last but not least, forming relationships with others may be the most popular reasons for the participation in unpaid work. To some people it is not the money earned that matters, the opportunities to make acquaintances with the same interest and hobbies play a more vital role.
In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that it is advantageous to teenagers to do unrewarded work although they have to be careful to avoid involving in accidents or affecting their health.
