Some schools have restricted the use of mobile phones Is this a positive development or a negative one

Essay topics:

Some schools have restricted the use of mobile phones. Is this a positive development or a negative one?

As a result of modernization, the question of schools restricting the use of mobile phones has arisen. But, its impact on school children whether positive or negative remains. Undoubtedly, students are distracted from school work and this may result to decreased productivity.

Restricting phone use in the classroom itself can improve learning. Because students are not distracted, they are able to focus on the lessons. When phones are within easy reach, students receive alerts and their mind is on the phones than on the lecture at hand. Even the most vigilant teachers may not be able to prevent all their students from reaching for their phones. While students at school are expected to do relevant work in order for them to learn material useful for their eventual careers, having a phone at hand distracts them and halts their school progress. Enabling children to focus on the lessons rather than on their phones by restricting its use during class hours, is a positive development in this case.

In order for children to develop social skills, engaging them in school tasks is a crucial step. Since they are busy with school work, they are able to focus on their classmates than on checking their phones. Having a phone in their pockets distracts students because the phones continue to vibrate, sending alerts and messages. Instead of socializing with each other, students are busy scrolling through their phones. Even though students are in school, their time is spent on their phones and not on learning from each other. Interpersonal and communication skills are not practiced nor enhanced and this hampers their capacity to work with other people in the future. Engaging students in the classroom by restricting the use of mobile phones help them to build social skills necessary for their personal development.

Although children have been allowed to have their own mobile phones due to modernization, having them at hand during school hours hampers their mental and social development. Other than allowing students to use their phones in class, teachers can restrict its use to enable them to focus on school work and on interacting with each other during class hours. Once this is done, students are mentally and socially prepared to embark on future careers.
