Some people think it is a good thing for a senior management positions to have very high salaries compared to other workers of the same company or organization. To what extent do you agree?
There is a global trend nowadays where salary structure varies across positions within organizations. The higher the roles and responsibility the higher the scale of salary and vice-versa. I find the argument contentious where a vast section of people believe that senior management should have a higher salary as compared to the other staff in a company. I completely agree with this argument and will elucidate on it with relevant examples.
Firstly most of the corporates follow a top-down approach where the senior positions like chief operating officer, Chief Technical offers and the business heads are paid exorbitant wages in comparison to other workers as these people are the brain of the company in closing more business transactions additionally they play vital role in defining the vision and constantly motivate the staff to achieve better results. The management also leads their specific teams by providing them instructions in completing tasks. As can be seen in the past from visionary leaders like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs who were heading giants like Microsoft and Apple respectively were paid exorbitant salaries due to the fact that they made immense contributions to enabling these companies to become global leaders.
Similarly, on the other hand, the lower staff is meant to follow the guidelines and the process already set out by the management. For instance, in a business unit, the product managers follow a process already in place setting out the product head. The product headsets out the key performance Indicators and the goals to be achieved by the staff.
Hence, in my opinion, it is evident that the management staff of the company plays a critical role in the setting the goals and guidelines for the staff necessary for the growth and survival of the company.
