The passage and the lecture are both about sea cow, which is an extinct marine mammal species. Eventually, the author of the reading points out that European fur traders who reach the island and killed a considerable number of sea cows could be the major cause of the species' extinction. Nonetheless, this statement is refuted by the lecturer. He contends that when European traders arrived on the island, the sea cows' population had already been small. In fact, there was an ongoing decline in their population before European traders' emergence to the island. Hence, these traders could not have been the reason for the extinction.
