The reading and listening material are contradicting with each other in terms of the government ownership of Amtrak. The author of the article states that the government should not own Amtrak and sell it to a privately-owned company, however, the lecturer casts doubt of this opinion and refutes all his reasons explained in the article.
First and foremost, the author argues that the government loses money on many Amtrak routes because these routes are set in remote and less populated areas which can not bring enough passengers to earn revenue. However, the lectures offer the opposite stand that the author fails to understand the meaning of the existence of these routes. She figures out these routes are not used to profit, but provide necessary service to people in need. Those people who live in remote areas own the same rights to have the service provided by the government.
Moreover, another topic of the debate is connected with that the author thinks the government ownership of Amtrak is unfair to privately owned transportation companies such as airlines because the government does not give these companies money to lower the price. While the lecturer refutes this theory by pointing out that the government does support airlines in multiple aspects, such as building necessary buildings, training workers, and setting off satellites to help them operate accurately.
Finally, the author's third reason that the government should invest more in other transportation systems because Amtrak is unimportant for Americans, is also counteracted by the lecturer. She says that the problem with Amtrak is because Amtrak is out of date. She uses examples in Japan and Europe to illustrate that with more investment in developing faster and more convenient railway systems, people are glad to take the train service. According to this phenomenon, she suggests that the government should invest more in Amtrak.
