asteroid colonization
The passage presents some presumed advantages of astreoid colonization compared to our Moon or Mars. The lecturer disregards all the points that are made in the article, and he claims that asteroid colonization is actually not practical. His further demonstrations are as follows.
First, although it is true that the low gravity condition makes landing and taking off easier for spacecrafts, it can have a serious negative effect on humans' health. A low gravity environment causes loss of muscle mass and bone density. Even astronats who spend few months in spaceships as low gravity settings face serious health issues as their muscle mass and bone density decreases. Thus, the low gravity of asteroids is potentially problematic for the colonies' health.
Second, while it may seem that mining valuable metals can cover the costs of asteroid colonization, it probably will not be the practical case in reality. Transferring colonies to asteroids and bringing mined metals to Earth can be rather expensive. Additionally, the profit made by selling those metals may not stay as high as today, since there will be a great increase in the supply. The high prices of these metals, like gold and platinum, are the result of their scarcity on Earth. Therefore, asteroid colonization can be very costly whithout an adequate source to make up for the loss.
Third, asteroids get close to the Earth on their orbits, however, they often travel in unusual paths. While it may be easy to get to an asteroid, the return from the asteroid can be extensively difficult since they may travel long distances from earth, much farther than the distance between Earth and a planet like Mars.
