current is important for salmon. summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard
The source discussing why current is important for young salmon. The life cycle of salmon depends on the flow of water When salmon is ready to lay eggs they travel back to the freshwater and females bury their eggs under the sand. After hatching when fish are large enough to swim it will move back to the pacific ocean. But in between, they face many obstacles.
from the passage, the young salmon called as smolts, they use melting snow to increase their speed to reach pacific ocean .perhaps the difficulty they face is first, the construction of dams has become an obstacle for both salmon navigating upstream and even to smolts traveling to sea. Secondly, the current is important for salmon to increase fast, but companies who run the dam slow the current. In addition, they store the water from melting snow .due to this fewer smolts reach the ocean and fewer adults.
The source has mentioned, few suggestions to overcome this. One such attempt is, transporting the smolts by barge. Another suggestion is by reducing the water level in the reservoirs for a time when smolts migrate downstream. This would increase the flow rate without requiring a massive amount of water and thus enable the young salmon to move downstream faster. But the electricians are not happy, it will reduce the electric power
Even after many attempts, the artificial method killed many fishes. The movement of smolts and salmon abated .this could eventually lead to the extinction od the fish and affect the marine life.in conclusion, we should cut using artificial methods for our use which will harm natural resources.
