Essay topics: TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task

The passage mainly discusses theories about the exact way in which the Chaco great houses were used. three theories are suggested by the passage as probable explanation of how these buildings were used. In the lecture, the speaker challenges these three theories and suggests that the evidences used in the passage are not substantiated.

First, the first explanation suggested by the passage is that the buildings were used as residence. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this theory by pointing out that a place that is used mainly for residence of hundreds of people, is supposed to have more fire places than what the buildings actually have. he says that hundreds of people would require a copious number of fire places to use them for cooking, which is not the case in the real buildings.

Moreover, the passage suggests that the buildings, given their big size, are more likely to be used to store food supplies. However, the lecturer doesn't agree with that. that is, he mentions that there is no traces of remains of food that would support this theory. Also, if this was the usage of the buildings, there must exist containers that were used for this storage of food.

Finally, the last theory discussed in the passage is that the buildings were used as ceremonial centers. On the other hand, the lecturer contradicts that, saying that the buildings not only contain broken pots, they only contain remains of construction materials. In this context, the lecturer suggests that these remains, in addition to other remains such as, trash and non used materials, are more probably remains of construction workers and are not indicative that the buildings were used as ceremonial centers as suggested by the passage.

Finally, the lecturer suggests that the evidences used in the passage to support the theories are not adequate for someone to draw such conclusions.
