Professor benefit from appearing on televisiom
Both in the reading passage and the lecture, the author is talking about whether the professor should appear on television or not. The reading passage argues three points as follows: the professor benefits from the appearance, the university too benefits from the professor's appearance and lastly the public gains knowledge from their favourite professor. But in the lecture it contradicts all the three points mentioned.
First of all, the author contends that the professor benefit from appearing on televison as they acquire reputation in their respected academic field and also gain audience. In the contrast, the lecturer argues that the appearance on televiion is not good for professor as it decreases their reputation in their feild. People or academic scholars would not consider the professor as a serious scholar but rather just see them as a mere entertainer. The professor might not get invited to important conferences and also face difficulty in getting money for their research work due to their television appearance.
Secondly, the author argues that the university receive positive publicity when their university's professor appear on television. But in opposition, the lecturer argues that the professor loose a lot of time. The time spent on doing rehearsals, makeup, dressing up, figuring out the speech, etc can be well spent on doing research work, meeting students, doing business meetings, etc.
Lastly, the author says that the public gains from professor's knowledge and expertise. At times it is difficult to meet the professor as they are busy but this would give them a chance to learn from the professor themself. But the lecturer refutes by saying that the television only showcases the entertainment and not serious academic lecture as it is not eye catching. The television shows background, movie version of literature work, achievements, etc. So, the television doesn't really show full expert lecture and reality.
