Question : Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture is about the reduction of five day work week to four day work week for reduced wage of four- fifth of normal wage. The article states that reducing the workday would benefit both the employee and workers and provide three reasons for the support. However, the professor explains that four days work week would instead doesn't benefit both company and workers and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that due to less work week, workers would replenish their energy thereby resting and fewer errors are likely to occur. So, hiring additional workers would not impact the overall payroll cost to the company. But, the professor refutes this point by saying that additional hiring of workers at lower wage rate would not benefit the comp[any. He states that hiring more workers in this four day work day increase the much more training, health benefits and equipment to the workers.
Second, the article points that more employment would be raise as-workload would be shifted to others. However, the professor says that it would not create employment. In saying so, the professor states that company may expect the same work load from four days week workers for the work of five days. This will therefore, does not create jobs.
Third, the reading says that workers who could afford a lower salary would have extra time to spend with the family to spend the quality of their lives. The professor opposes this point by explaining that during the economic shut down, the workers working in four day schedule might loose their jobs. Moreover, the workers on the department like management are less likely to compete their position to higher level with the workers working on the five day week schedule.
