A recent study reveals that people, especially young people, are reading far
less literature—novels, plays, and poems—than they used to. This is troubling
because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for culture In
general, and for the future of literature itself.
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast
doubt on speclflc points made in the reading passage.
The reading passage and the article discuss a decline in reading literature among young people and its implications. The writer states that this trend has an adverse impact on culture, future of literature, and the readers themselves. However, the lecturer disagrees with this point of view and explains why this tendency is not as critical as it is claimed to be.
First of all, the article states that reading less fiction retards mental development, a serious problem for young people. However, the speaker argues that there is other high quality literature, such as political or historical, which is as creative as novels, plays, and poems. So such books could provide the intellectual stimulation too.
Secondly, the passage presumes that young people do not read literature and switch to badly written books, TV shows, or the internet. The lecturer, on the other hand, contends that the level of culture cannot drop if a person listens to nice music or watches good movies. This way of entertainment is the reflection of culture that is changing, not deteriorating.
Finally, the author claims that because of a decline in the reading, talented writers cannot get financial help of the publishers since fewer people want to read serious novels. Nonetheless, the speaker explains that it is the fault of those authors who write literary works that are difficult to comprehend, so young readers do not have a desire to buy such books.
