Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth than the Moon is. Thus the project of sending humans to Mars would require solving an array of problems the Moon missions did not have to face.
One problem is that a round-trip to Mars and back is likely to take at least two years. The trip to the Moon lasted only a few days, and it was easy to bring enough supplies of food, water, and oxygen; but the cargo capacity of space vehicles is too limited to put on board the food, water, and oxygen required by a crew for a period of two years. Without those essentials, though, a Mars mission is impossible.
A second problem is that astronauts on the Mars mission would be in the zero-gravity environment of space for many months at a time. Spending a long time in the zero-gravity environment has negative effects on the human body, such as decreased muscle mass and lower bone density. Over the course of a two-year mission, the effects would be so severe, they would make it impossible for humans to make the trip without experiencing grave medical problems.
Finally, astronauts on a mission to Mars would be exposed to dangerous levels of space radiation, much of which comes in the form of charged particles emitted by the Sun. Earth's magnetic field, which normally protects us from dangerous solar radiation, would not be able to protect a spaceship traveling in interplanetary space. Constructing a shield that would protect the whole spaceship from space radiation is at present impossible because it would add too much weight to the ship.
The main message of the passage was mars trip is impossible due to several problems compared to trip to moon was. However, the message of the passage was refuted by the speaker. His main claim was though the trip to mars was difficult as compared to moon, it is not much impossible to the extent as mentioned by the writer. The speaker has mentioned several reasons to bolster her stand.
For the first reason, as the passage mentioned that cargo plane need to take much supplies like food and oxygen for the time to be spent. However, the speaker mentioned that due to the facility of hydroponics technique to grow or cultivate food crops in water which has relatively less weight as compared to soil, the load being taken by the space vehicle can be reduced. Also the technique requires relatively less space. He further added that plants use carbondioxide gas and exchange oxygen that enables to reduce oxygen load to be taken.
Secondly, the writer had mentioned that in zero gravity has negative effects in the health of astronauts like as lowering bone density and decreased muscle mass. However, the speaker has refuted the message by mentioning that in many launched vehicles many astronauts have spent there with learning regular exercise techniques. He supported that such regular exercise do not reduce muscle mass and calcium of bone.
For the third reason, the writer has mentioned that there is a dangerous of space radiation exposure inside the spaceship traveling through space. But the speker contradicted the logic by mentioning few stances in this regard. Speaker mentioned that there is dangerous of radiation sometimes not all the time, like ocasionally during the active time of radiation. He further added that there is provision of equipment fitted that protects or shields and protects astronauts. And the equipment is not as much weight, less weight to be carried by the ship. The radiation can be detected and after detection the astronauts can enter inside the small protective shielded area.
