Recently ,there has been lot of ongoing debate on high taxes imposed on smoking and people consuming unhealthy foods and beverages.More specifically,in regard to the passage ,writer puts forth the number of benefits this scheme has on society .In the listening passage,professor is quick to point out flaws in writer claims.
On group of scholars,represented by author thinks that these taxes are financially fair as financial burden is shifted from all of Society to just people participating in unhealthy habits.But the speakers challenges this idea by saying these taxes don’t account for people income.Since High and low income earning people has to pay the same taxes ,it’s unfair for people with low income.They are more likely to be under financial burden.
Finally ,the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that taxes could increase revenue for the government.The professor casts doubt on this claim.According to him,the government might depend on these taxes.This could even impair government from making new laws and preventing measures to control smoking.
