The passage points out a fact that the salinity, which refers to the salt level of water, of the Salton Sea in California, is raising continuously for years. To stop the the trend of being more and more salty, the passage gives out three options. However, the lecturer holds the view that none of these options would work.
The first option is to remove the salt from the lake by distillation. With some special machines, the water can be heated and evaporate into stream finally, but the salt and other chemicals which was originally dissolved in the lake water would be solidified and left behind. However, the lecture argues that not all of the chemicals can be solidified, such as suliminium. These chemicals may evaporate and be released into the air and may have a healthy risk to the local residents.
The second option is to pull water from the ocean and pump it into the lake to dilute the salt level. The water in the Pacific Ocean has much lower salinity than the lake water, so the salt level of the lake would be decreased if the ocean water is put into the lake. The lecture attacks this option by the reason that to bring the water from ocean into the lake, some pipelines must be built to connect the lake and the ocean. Yet, the direct distance between two waters is over 100 kilometers. As a result, such a long pipeline is very expensive and the local government is not likely to afford this project.
The third and the last option is to divide the lake into several parts by building some walls underwater, and then guide all water from rivers into the main and the largest one of the sections. Consequently, though the salt level of some small sections are expected to increase, even faster, the salinity of the main section can be reduced. Whereas the lecture points out that the lake is located in a place that geographic activities, like earthquakes, frequently happens. Therefore, even though the wall project may work for a short time. After an earthquake, the wall shall be broken and the salty water from the small sections would flush into the main section, and the whole project then should fail.
In conclusion, all of the options given by the passage is not practical or appliable enough. Some other plan should be came out to solve the problem.
