The author of the reading states that university should start shifting their focus on research rather than teaching. The lecturer disagrees. He mention it is not a better idea of concentrating more on research as they are not a today’s priority and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
Firstly, the author begins by stating that it is imperative foe any college to get higher ranking position and without emphasizing on research it is not possible. Therefore, university should focus on research work. The professor believes there are flaws in th writer’s position. He contends that national ranking on the basis of research used to be priotize in past. Now it is out dated instead, every university are now corcerning towards how to improve teaching ability.
Secondly, according to the writing professor getting more focused on research aids university to gain wide recognition in public which eventually attracts more students. Besides, university are suceptible to get fund for it. The speaker on other hand points out that public intellectuals are now focusing towards how to provide quality education rather than quantity education. In addition, they not just take material and make understandable however interesting as well.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that students automatically get advantage through the public appearance of college. Professor who focus on research of their concerned subject can provide students in depth knowledge about the subject matter. The professor rebus this argument. He puts forth the idea that teacher who spends more time on teaching can give better education. She even give an instance of herself as she is good at teaching although she knows little about research. Likewise, her colleague, she is best at her research work but barely can give lecture. This shows research work and teaching are two distinct thing.
As we can see, the author and the professor holds conflicting views on whether to shift focus from research to teaching method. The speaker effectively challenges the points made in the article.
