Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The reading and lecture are both about the human figured statue which is called Moai. The author of the reading states that although the construction of statue has created a revenue for government, this has adversely affected the island’s culture. The lecturer disagrees. He opposes the idea and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
First, the author of the reading states that owing to the construction, natural resources are exploited in large number. In addition, in order to move large statue wooden track with log rollers are used which are made by cutting down large trees. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that statues are transported by using rope not wooden log. Thus, no natural resources are destroyed in the process of transportation.
Secondly, according to the writing because of deforestation, migration of birds to the island is plummeting. Furthermore, fishing industry has caused palm trees to dwindle as boats are made by using the wood. The speaker on other hands points out that major reason for deforestation is moving of rat along with the first settlers to the island instead. The rats are found to attack palm trees in a deadly manner which eventually results in the declining of trees.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that declination of population is elevating with the increment of desertification of island as there is no food available. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that it is just an assumption that population once reached to 20000. The recent research has shown no evidence to prove the population to reach at peak. Moreover, the largest population was just about 2000 all over the history. Hence, construction of statue has nothing to do with decreasing inhabitants.
As we can see, the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on building of Moai statue. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
