Summarize the points made in lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The article states that today’s young generation doesn’t want to read literature like novels, plays, and poems. According to the reading, it is troubling and unfortunate and it provides three reasons of support. But the professors explain that only literature doesn’t promote culture and there are many forms of it.
First, the reading claims that there is a decline in book reading and especially literature. This is very unfortunate as public is missing out many important benefits such as intellectual simulation, imagination and sympathy for others. However, the professor explains that there are many other books on Science, History, Political analysis which are far better than literature. These books also can provide equal intellectual simulation and good imagination to its reader.
Second, the author posits that people are not only avoiding important benefits of literature, they are also spending time on poorly written self-help books, television shows, music, videos etc. According to author, these are intellectually undemanding. But, the professor explains that culture has changed in these days. There are many forms of expressing a good culture. There are plentiful of movies, songs which impose good culture and a person becomes culturally rich if he watches a good movie.
Third, the reading says that as trend of reading literature is going down, it has a negative impact on the authors of literature. Publishers do not want to support the authors any more except very few writers. The professor opposes this point by explaining that there may be some author’s fault for less sale of literature. Many modern literature are very difficult to digest and audience tend to avoid them.
