TOEFL T P O 5 - Integrated Writing Task

The reading passage suggests that three evidential theories about the purpose of the Chaco great house. The lecturer contradicts the reading passage’s claim that all of these theories are unconvincing.

First, the reading argues that the great houses were used to residential places for hundreds of people. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that despite their similarities of outside appearances with apartment buildings at Taos, the Chaco structures had not enough places inside for fires to cook for many people. It showed only ten families could make a fire and cook their meals.

Second, The reading contends that the Chaco structures were for containing grain because their size were appropriate for storing food supplies. On the other hand, this counters lecturer’s claim that the excavation of the Chaco structures shows that there were no tracks of maze or remains of maze containers which does not make sense if the Chaco store the tremendous amount of grain maze.

Finally, the reading asserts that the Chaco structures were functioned as ceremonial centers. Near the great houses, there was a mound that seems to be the ceremonial place and excavated broken pots to be used for ceremonies. This refutes the reading passage’s claim that the mound possessed a lot of different materials except pots. It contained building materials and construction tools which lead to the conclusion that pots also might be the regular trash or leftovers for construction workers.
