TPO-03 - Integrated Writing Task Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rem

The lecture explained how a panel of experts proved that the old lady painting was done by Rembrandt the most famous dutch painter in the seventeenth century, while the passage showed some problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work done by Rembrandt.

First of all, the passage talked about the inconsistency of the woman's clothes , as she was wearing a white linen cap which is a kind that only servants wear and a coat with a luxurious fur that no servant could afford. But, in the lecture it was mentioned that a panel of experts examined the portrait with x-ray and they discovered that the fur colour was actually painted over the original painting.

Secondly, It was mentioned in the passage that Rembrandt was a master in shadow and light, but in this specific painting they did not fit together . This issue was clarified during the lecture as it was mentioned that once they removed the added colour they found that the lady was wearing a light colour coat which reflexes the colour and elluminate the lady's face.

Thirdly, The original painting was enlarged by adding more wood pieces to the main portrait probably to make it more valuable. This explains why it was mentioned in the passage that this painting was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together although Rembrandt used to paint on wood panels.

Finally, In the lecture, one more factor was mentioned to prove that this painting belong to Rembrandt. The experts found out that the panel used in that specific painting and the panel used in another painting by Rembrandt, which was his self-portrait with a hat, are actually coming from the same type of tree.
