TPO 14 Q1
The article states that salvage logging is beneficial both to a damaged forest and to the economy. However, the professor explains that there are problems with the author’s arguments. The professor believes that salvage logging advantages are controversy and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading states that after a devastating fire, salvage logging removes the remains of dead trees and makes room for fresh growth immediately. The professor refutes this point by stating that cleaning up the forests of dead trees harms the habitat because it significantly deprives the soil of important materials. In other words, dead trees provide essential nutritive substances that are indispensable for the resurgence of the forest.
Second, the article claims that salvage logging helps decline the dangers of insect incursion. Conversely, the lecturer argues that all the insects are not bad even spruce bark beetle lived in Alaskan forests for hundreds of years without causing any considerable damage. She asserts that dead trees are shelter not only for harmful insects but also for different species of insects and birds.
Third, although the author of the reading claims that salvage logging has an enormous impact on the economy, the professor counters that argument by asserting that the economic benefits of doing such things are small and temporary. Because many expensive tools and machines like helicopters will be needed to maintain that place. Also, the job which might be created for this aim is temporary, and it needs hiring the people who are not local which costs a lot of training.
