TPO 21- Integrated essay

Both, the reading and the lecture, talk about the use of trees genetically modified. While the author claims that it bring many advantages, the lecturer affirms that, even when its benefits are unquestionable, it has significant drawbacks. She refutes each reason presented, casting doubts in the author's beliefs.

Firstly, the reading points out that genetically modified trees have a higher survival rate, owing to they are more resistant to virus infection. However, the professor disproves this idea by noticing that, those plants have no genetic diversity, due to that, they are resistant only to that event they were created to resist. but, if occur a different incident, they will all die, since they are genetically almost exact copies. On the other hand, natural trees are genetically diverse, therefore, when they cope an adverse event, just die those that are not genetically prepared to face it, but others will survive.

Secondly, the text argues that, owing to modified trees grow more swiftly, they are more profitable that their wild counterpart. Nonetheless, the orator contradicts this argument and affirms that companies sell modified seeds more expensive that the natural ones. Furthermore, by law, farmers cannot get seeds from this generation and use them for the next harvest for free, they must pay to the companies again, which means an increment in their costs.

Finally, the author remarks that with the use of genetically modified plants, it is possible to meet the demand of wood, which reduces drastically the exploitation of the forest. Notwithstanding, the professor highlights that, as a result of its elevated rate of growing, those plant are more aggressive in their fight to obtain natural resources, leaving out of the competence their natural counterpart. As a result, the latter will suffer negative consequences.
