Both the author and the lecturer discuss the causes of the Little Ice Age. While the author states three possible causes that create the Little Ice Age, the lecturer disagrees with these reasons, casting doubt on every single reason the author mentioned.
First of all, the author states that the disruption of the Gulf Stream which is a large ocean current strongly affects the Earth's climate as the melted glaciers due to the unusually warm weather sent a large amount of cold freshwater into the Gulf Stream. In opposition to this, the lecturer brings up the idea that the disruption of the Gulf Stream can just influence Europe and North America. The cooling effect, however, can be seen in Southern parts of the earth like New Zealand and Southern Africa. Thus, it is not likely that the cold weather in these areas is because of the disruption of the Gulf Stream.
Second, the author believes that the volcano eruptions release some gases to the atmosphere and as a result, these gases trap sunlight, blocking it from reaching the Earth's surface. On the contrary, the lecturer possesses the view that it is possible for gases coming from the volcanoes eruptions to block the sunlight unless there are small levels of them. Furthermore, the high levels of gases due to the volcanic eruption can be seen in the gray or brown color of the snow and a colorful sunset. However, no reports like gray snow have been told.
Finally, the author argues that the decline in the human population may have contributed to the cooling of the climate since the trees in the forests will remain intact. In this way, the trees absorb more carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas warming the Earth. Conversely, the lecturer believes that the population decrease recovered soon and as a result, trees were cut down in order to grow crops in the lands to feed the growing population. In addition, there should be a long enough time that trees can have such effects on the Earth’s climate.
