According to the reading, the author of this passage talks that some dinosaur can survive in Alaska that is very cold today and the reading provides an example of edmontosaur and several arguments to support the migration hypothesis which explain how these dinosaurs can survive in Alaska. However, the professor asserts that these arguments are not convinced and she provides several reasons of her statement.
The first argument in the reading is about the edmontosaur’s diet. Their diet can support the migration hypothesis because they must eat plant which need to grow on warm place so that they must migrate to find some plants to eat. However, the professor asserts that whether the edmontosaur can survive in Alaska is not due to the weather. This is because the weather in summer in Alaska during past time is not as cold as today. In the summer, it even have sunshine during all day so that the edmontosaur can eat enough food in the summer. In addition, in the winter, the edmontosaur can eat the die plants which have plenty of nutrition.
The second argument in the reading is about that many edmontosaur skeletons already be found from the same site. It shows that they lived in herd which can helps animals coordinate their migration. Nevertheless, the professor claims that the demontosaur lived in herd may in order to protect their children. The example is about elk, it is a kind of plant eater and it live in herd but they never migrate.
The last argument in the reading is about that the edmontosaurs had physical capability of migrating long distances. They could run very fast to go to anther place which is warmer. On the contrary, the professor alleges that the high speed running just fit for adults, didn’t fit for young edmontosaurs. In that case, if the edmontosaurs lived in herd, they may not be able to move to another place which is warmer immediately.
- At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species. It was this extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to become the dominant species for the next 60
