TPO-42

Both the reading and the listening discuss how glass used in buildings impact life of birds. The author of the reading believes that there are some ways to prevent birds from flying through glass and getting hurt. The lecturer, however, casts doubts on the cliams made in the reading. He disagrees with all three methods introduced in the passage to minimize the possibility of birds getting hurt.

First of all, the author points out that one-way glass may be a prpoer way to keep birds safe. It is mentioned that, although the people living in the buildings can see outside, but the birds cannot see in, as a result they will not try to fly through the glass. This point is challenged by the professor. He says that one-way glass is just like mirror and mirrors are just as bad as clear glass for birds. Furthermore, he notes that birds cannot understand mirrors and they will get confuse by the reflection of objects like sky and trees in the mirror and they will probably try to fly through it.

Secondly, the author contends that architects can paint colorful shapes and designs on normal window glass in order to keep the birds away from the glass. The lecturer rebut this argument. He says that the openings on the window from which people can see outside are assumed to be holes by birds and they want to fly through them. He elaborates on this by mentioning that if we really want to keep the birds away from window we should make these openings extremely small and it will make the rooms dark and unpleasant.

Finally, the article establishes that birds have a natural ability to feel earth's magnetic field and they use it to navigate. The author states that if we use powerful electromagnets in buildings we can drive the birds away from windows. The professor, on the other hand, points that birds only use their ability in long distances such as migration. He puts forth the idea that these soloution will not be effective in cities.
