TPO 43: Integrated task
The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about agnostides which were a species of marine animal and became extinct about 450 years ago. The author of the passage states three theories about feeding habit and behavior of agnostids. While the lecturer believes those theories are not basically true and have some weaknesses.
First of all, the author brings up the theory that agnostids were free swimmers and hunted smaller animals. This theory is based on the fact that primitive arthropods were also strong swimmers and active predators. Hence, it is possible that agnostids would behave this way too. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that strong predators have well-developed sight system and big eyes in order to track their prey, while the agnostids did not have a complicated vision system. Therefore, If they were strong predators, they might have had a strong sensory system.
Secondly, the author mentions that as some primitive arthropods lived on the seabed it is possible that agnostids had the same behavior too. The speaker, however, asserts that creatures which live on the seafloor are not agile and usually do not have the ability to move fast and they are localized in a specific site. By contrast, agnostids had the ability to move fast and swim along far distances. Also, evidence indicates that they were in multiple geological areas.
Finally, the author states that as many modern arthropods like flea and tick are parasites and live and feed on a large animal it is possible that agnostids had the same behavior. The lecturer, however, rebuts this theory by explaining that parasites should have a short population, otherwise they would kill off their host. Base on vast amounts of fossil records, agnostids had a large population, hence, it is not likely that they were parasites.
