Both the reading and the lecture try to compare two different ways that doctors can record medical information of their patients. While the reading talks about the advantages of electronic databases and brings some reasons to support this claim, The lecturer finds all these ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author argues that by using electronic databases, doctors can save some money. There is no need to pay a lot for a storage space in order to keep paper base data , and transferring and duplicating the data is easier and cheaper. On the contrary, the lecturer brings up the idea that doctors can not save a significant amount of money with the aid of electronic databases due to the fact that they always have to keep the papers as an emergency backup; therefore, they need to pay for the storage space.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that electronic databases can diminish personal errors in medical treatments that are usually caused because of improper transcription, illegible handwriting and so on. In contrast, the professor plays up with the idea that this new method, can not reduce mistakes owing to the truth that doctors still need to use paper in order to write down the treatment procedures. Office staffs are the ones who convert this data to the electronic form and interpret doctors' handwriting; therefore, it is possible for them to make mistakes.
Last but not least, the reading asserts that the usage of electronic databases makes it easier for medical researchers to access a wide range information they need because the data is already in the information format, which makes it possible to use them. Conversely, the lecturer dismisses this idea and believes that researchers can not access a wide range of data easily because many people want their data to be private and not be used in a research. There are strict laws about the usage of the information of each patient's treatment; for example, researchers need to get permission from them. This problem makes it hard for researchers to follow this trend and use information easily.
