The reading and the lecture are both about populations of the yellow cedar and the causes of decreasing the numbers them in North America. The reading provided three reasons but the professor rejected these reasons and he believes none of the reasons in the reading are not adequate.
First of all, the author claims that insects and specially bark beetle are cause to many damages to these trees and they are good candidate for killing the yellow cedar. But in contrary, the professor says that the yellow cedar are more resistent than other trees against these beetles and there is a powerful medical in these trees that allowed them to denfence toward insects. So, it is unlikely to consider these insects as a possible cause for killing the yellow cedar.
Secondly, the author states that eating the tree bark by bears is another reasons for decline the number of the yellow cedars. But in contrast, this argument is rebutted by the lecture. He suggests decline of the yellow cedar accures in mainlands and islands, but there are no bears in islands. Thus the bears are not responsible for decreasing the the yellow cedar.
Finally, the author mentions that changing in the climate affected the root systems of the yellow cedar and causes them to be freezed. So, freezing the roots causes damage to the whole tree. But the lecture, on the other hand, feels that the author forgets that the decline has seen more in lower elevations while the lower elevations are more warmer than higher elevation. Furthermore, the climate is not good reason too.
