The passage compares communal online encyclopedias with traditional ones and mentions three main problems of the online versions. However, the lecturer asserts that the issues illustrated in the passage are based on prejudice, and the writer doesn't know how far the online encyclopedias have come.
First, the passage points out that since anyone can edit contents of an online encyclopedia, it is highly probable that inaccurate information appears on them. On the other hand, the lecturer alleges that none of the traditional encyclopedias have been perfect so far. Also, it is a significant advantage of online ones that errors are easy to correct in comparison to mistakes that remain in the printed encyclopedias for a long time.
Second, the writer refers to the problems which hackers might create on online encyclopedias since the contents are accessible to them. On the contrary, the professor explains that most online encyclopedias do their best to protect essential materials. For example, they offer crucial information only in read-only format. Moreover, there are always some expert editors that monitor the new materials to prevent malicious corruptions.
The final point that the author mentions is that the relative importance of different articles is not noticeable in online encyclopedias because there are immense reading contents corresponding to any topic, whether it is a significant one or not. Conversely, the lecturer states that this is one of the benefits of online encyclopedias that the space is not limited. She claims that in the case of traditional encyclopedias, a group of academic people never could select the topics which appeal to all people. Instead, online versions now provide a great diversity of subjects in various majors, and it is the most substantial advantage of online encyclopedias.
