Young people reading less literature and how this affects culture.
The article introduces the topic of young people reading less literature than in the past. More specifically, the writer discusses that this is a problem for the culture and the future of literature. The lecturer in the lecture passages disagrees. She states that is not true that this trending affects the culture and attacks each of the claims made in the reading.
In the reading, the author begins by stating that literature provides the most in intellectual stimulation, so the decline in book reading is a misfortune. The lecturer, however, disagrees. In the listening, the speaker mentions that there are other kinds of good readings, such as science writings, political analysis, and so on. Regarding this, she states that if the writings are high-quality, they must stimulate the imagination.
The author also claims that the problem is not only about people not taking adventage of the benefits that literature provides, it is also about what they are reading instead. The writer holds that there are books poorly written, with no stimulation for the readers that now are best-sellers. Specifically, it is mentioned about the self-help books. Also, people only focus on watching tv, or other means of trivial entertainment that decrease the level of culture. Again, the lecturer believes there are flaws in the writer's logic. The professor puts forward the fact that there are many ways to be aware of culture and to stimulate us creativity, and other skills. Music, movies are just two examples of this. She added that it is wrong for the speaker to think that a good film will not contribute to the culture. Moreover, the culture have changed. Nowadays, the culture is more direct to the young population.
Another reason why the author feels that the lack on reading literature is a problem is that today there a really good writers. Part of the problem is the low invest on literature. In that way, it is very difficult for the talented people to access to better audiences. On the contrary, the professor theorizes that it is foult of the writers, not of the investment. It is well-known that modern literature is really hard to read, even for them. Logically, young people have lost interest on literature, so that is the reason for less support.
