zebra mussels

Essay topics:

zebra mussels

The reading believes that zebra mussels’ invasion is unstoppable and will cause negative impacts on freshwater fish populations, but the lecture thinks that there are ways to control the invasion.

First, the writer says that the spread of zebra mussels cannot be stopped because the invasion of zebra mussels is made by human transportation. On the contrary, the speaker argues that the reason why people can’t control the spread is that they didn’t have enough knowledge in the past, and now when the ship sails from a country to another, they will empty out the fresh water and refill with ocean water while they are still in the ocean. The salt water will kill those zebra mussels.

Second, the passage believes that zebra mussels will dominate the habitat after they arrive there. However, the speaker doubts that zebra mussels will dominate there only in the beginning, because after they arrive there, local animals’ diet will change. For example, birds will eat a lot of zebra mussels.

Third, the reading argues that zebra mussels will result in the reduction of all fish population in those zebra mussels’ habitats, while the lecturer thinks that zebra mussel do bring negative impacts to some fish population in habitat, but it will bring positive effects to some fish populations too, such as those bottom-feeding fish that eat the nutrients produced by zebra mussels.
