Official 28 - Integrated Writing Task

The passage mainly provides three reasons to support the truth of Robert Peary's claim that this famous explorer had reached North Pole within 37 days. However, the listening material cast doubt on the claims by pointing out the limitations of the three theories.

First and foremost, the passage believes that an investigation done by Notional Geographic Society proved that Peary did went to the North Pole. But the speaker says that the investigation was biased. Because the investigator is a close friend of Peary. He is also the one who raised the money for Peary's adventure, which makes it quite reasonable to question the reliability of the result of the investigation.

Secondly, the text suggests the speed is not an issue due to Tom Avery, another explorer has repeated Peary's trip within 37 days, thus Peary was telling the truth. In contrast, the listening points out Avery didn't carry the food all the way as Peary mentioned, instead, he has his food supply from an airplane. Also, in Avery's case, the weather condition was much better, which makes it easier to accomplish the trip.

Third, the author states that the photo, as Peary claimed, taken from the North Pole is a solid evidence. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that the shadows are the most important point to test the exact position of the photo. While on Peary's photo, the shadows were blur and fainted, which could not be a persuasive evidence.
