Students have different opinions when it comes to the debate that which type of teaching style they prefer? Some students believe that solely teacher delivers the lecture in the classroom is better as it allows maximum use of lecture time. While others prefer classroom in which students are engaged in conversation.
In my opinion, the later one is a better approach as it is more efficient way of teaching and teaches other important skills necessary for a real world. It helps students to develop a broad view of the subject.
First, students’ engagement in class makes classroom study more enjoyable for students. In a situation, when students have to just listen to the lecture, makes class boring for students. On the other hand, engagement in dialogue makes the study more interesting for students as they participate in the learning process. It helps students to pay attention in class rather than becoming a passive listener. Interest in learning motivates students to understand the concept and learn efficiently. In a traditional method, where a teacher explains, students may not understand and retain information. If students are allowed to ask questions and clear their doubts, it helps them to understand and remember in a better way.
Second, dialogue engagement helps students to do critical thinking and problem solving. A teacher encourages students to do a discussion or make a presentation, students think over the topic; try to find out the solution based on their knowledge and experience. This helps them to develop thinking process and solve problems. Students learn communication skills which are essential in real world work environment. During a classroom discussion, students learn to debate with their classmate and explain their views. Learning through discussion makes student better thinker and communicator. These are important skills that help students in a real- world work environment.
Third, students’ participation in discussion helps to learn materials from a different perspective. In a classroom where a professor delivers the topic, students learns from what teacher explains to them. During a discussion, students learn from other students as well. This helps them to learn about the topic from a different view- points. Students develop a broader knowledge base about the topic. For example, during my exercise therapy class in college, I learned a lot from other students. Our instructor explained us basic principles of strengthening for leg muscle and gave several examples. Then, during a discussion, I came to know different leg exercises that other students in the class discussed. If only a teacher had taught in class, I would not have thought about other varieties of exercises.
In conclusion, I believe that student engages in a classroom discussion is a better teaching method as it is beneficial for students. Active participation of students with teacher’s guidance is an effective way of teaching. It helps them to learn and to prepare for the future.
