The next outbreak? We are not ready. Speaker: Bill Gates
Bill Gates commenced his speech with introducing the most worrisome disaster of the previous century – nuclear war. Some Americans used to preserve barrels of canned food and hide in basements in case of nuclear threat. Nevertheless, these days viruses and microbes are far more dangerous than nuclear bombs, according to the speaker. Also, Mr. Gates affirmed humanity is not ready for such pandemics as Ebola and any other viruses unless some preventive actions are taken.
The speaker provided an example of virus Ebola which killed over 10,000 people within a year and half when there was an outbreak in Africa few years ago. This was a global failure since treatments were delayed and there were not enough skilled personnel. However, Bill Gates stated that we are lucky due to the several factors that did not let Ebola spread all over the world; he mentioned first heroism of health workers, secondly he told about nature of the virus, which was Ebola failed to spread via air, and lastly the outbreak was not in an urban area. All these factors let the virus not to spread; nonetheless, humanity was not always that lucky since the speaker mentioned about the virus – Spanish Flu – which killed 33 million individuals all over the world in 1918. He, also, stated that the magnitude of Ebola disaster could have been worse, had the virus been similar to Spanish Flu.
The above examples are frightening, therefore, Mr. Gates proposed some preventive actions. He advised to strengthen health system so medical personnel would be ready for virus outbreaks. Also, the speaker suggested forming medical corps within armed forces. Thirdly, medicine and military have to be paired in order to respond swiftly to any disasters. Moreover, Bill Gates suggested creating different simulations and models of disasters so military and medical personnel had an opportunity to train. Lastly, Mr. Gates advised to enhance research and development facilities in order scientists could produce remedies to different kinds of viruses. Some people may consider these solutions money consuming; however, the speaker asserted that any global outbreak could have cost 3 trillion dollars and millions of casualties.
Bill gates concluded that we should start now to be ready for outbreaks.
