Trees
The article and the lecture offer two contrasting views on the effects of genetically modified trees on the environment. The author asserts that they provide numerous benefits both to the environment and human and lists three reasons to support the claim. Contrary to the passage, the professor demonstrates that even though they provide some benefits, genetically modified trees can cause significant problems and therefore, the presented explanations are skeptical.
First, the passage contends that genetically modified trees are resistant to harsh environmental situations such as pests and hence, they can survive through these conditions. The professor, however, opposes this point by explaining the fact that they are resistant to only one specific condition. She puts forth the idea that natural trees are genetically diverse and as a result, they are more resistant against various disturbances such as sudden changes in climate. While genetically modified trees are much more genetically uniform and if an unexpected condition occur, they will become disappeared.
Next, the professor refutes the idea that they have financial advantages. Although the passage points out that they produce more food or other products in a rapid rate, the professor implies that they embrace hidden costs and farmers should pay a huge amount money to afford modified trees. Moreover, she argues that farmers can't collect the new produced seeds from modified trees and then plant them for free. Indeed, they should pay the modifier company every time for planting new trees.
Finally, the text points out that the exploit of genetically modified trees may stop overuse of wild trees because the modified trees are designed to grow faster and to engender more yield. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that they are harmful to the environment because they grow aggressively and they consume all of the required resources for growth such as sunlight or water. The professor believes that an unnecessary competition over the resources will prevent the growth of natural trees.
All in all, the article and the lecture appear to be in disagreement about the advantages of genetically modified trees.
