Both of the reading and lecture are about Robert. Peary. This person was the first explorer who could arrive to the North Pole in 1909. The reading provides three reasons that Peary could do the mentioned success and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all arguments dubious.
First of all, the author of reading declares that for proving the aforementioned discovery, The National Geography community sent a research group to the North Pole to evaluate the validity of this story, at the end of survey; the team affirmed that Peary could reach this place. This point is challenged by the lecturer and she point out that assessment of National Geography society was unfair because this society is one of the Peary's friends and even more they funded him for this trip. She elaborates on this by mentioning that mentioned evaluation lasted just 2 days and it was not enough for gaining conclusive evidence.
Secondly, the article contends that Peary could reach the North Pole in 37 days; hence, another person who was called Tom Avery attempted to test the Peary's story. He used the same kind of dogsleds and the same number of dogs and finally, Avery arrived to the North Pole in the same number of days- 37 days- ; consequently, he believed that Peary's claim was true; in contrast, the professor expresses that Avery's stuff was less than Peary's burden because Avery's food was carried by the airplane. Furthermore, the condition of weather was different in the Peary's time and Avery did not experience the harsh weather circumstances.
Finally, the reading passage states that there are some photos which are able to prove Peary's discovery. Scholars could have measured shades. Based on the shades, researchers could determine the sun's positions in the sky which matched with the sun's positions in the North Pole. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer again and she poses that these photos belong one hundred years ago and they have taken by an old camera; subsequently, a great number of them have blurred or even the shades have fed, so the researchers could not evaluate them.
