summarize
According to the reading, the number of sea otters has been rapidly decreased which has grown concern for the researchers because they are an important role in the ecology of the coastal ecosystem. Two reasons were hypothesized. First, the water pollution and second, they might be eaten by the predators. Based on the lecture, both reasons are rejected. The comparisons are stated in details hereunder.
First, the text has stated that researchers have got some samples from the water and they have seen that oil—which has produce because of the industrial chemical pollution—was existed in the water. The lecturer opposes this hypothesize because she says that investigates have been shown that there is no sea otter dead in the coast. If the pollution was the true reason, investigations would reveal some sea otters dead in the coast.
Second, by considering the text, because the number of seals and sea lions are decreased as well, they've again returned to the pollution hypothesize. If it didn't be, this measurable disappearing in these sea animals might be because a great number of predators which have eaten them but the predators of these animals rather to hunt bigger animals like whales. In contrast, the lecturer against this idea because investigates again show that there were no whale there because they've left there as a result of human hunting so the predators have nothing to eat but these sea animals.
Third, based on the context, they've thought that an uneven pattern which has happened in Alaska is as a result of water pollution because the number of sea otters has reduced in some location, while it had remained in other parts. Some scientists think this condition is influenced by some water problem. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees this phenomenon as well. She thinks that the theory is better explained by the orca predation rather than pollutions. In locations in which orca predations have a better access, the number of sea otters will greatly be reduced. Hence, the number of sea otters will be increased in shallow or rocky locations because orca predations are so big an animal that cannot access to these environments.
