In the reading, the author claims that genetic modification in trees in order to improve their characteristics has several advantages by pointing out 3 of them as support. However, finding all the benefits questionable and implausible, the lecturer repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that genetically modified trees are more likely to survive than unmodified ones. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that being designed for more adversely conditions does not necessarily lead to survival. Moreover, if a plant species designed to be hardier is exposed to a different condition or undergo a situation which it is not designed for, such as climate change, it may be wiped out.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that genetically modified trees tend to grow faster and produce more fruits; so, they have also economic benefits. That being said, the lecturer disputes this idea by clarifying the fact that using and planting modified trees is costly. Companies which modify trees' genes and sell their seeds tend to charge farmers much. Not only do farmers pay these companies when they buy seeds but they also have to pay them every time they planting seeds produced by genetically modified trees.
Finally, the author draws attention to preventing overexploitation of wild trees by introducing modified trees which grow fast and produce high yield as the last point for supporting the claim that this kind of trees has a lot of benefits. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out the fact that modified trees grow among natural trees. Owing to their improved characteristics they can imperil natural trees by using all natural resources such as water and nutrients in the soil. Consequently, not only do they save the native trees but they also nudge them toward the extinction.
