TPO-05 - Integrated Writing Task As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand th
The reading and lecture are both about great houses of the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. The author believes that these buildings are capable of accommodating large number people due to it have hundreds of rooms and it is a three to four stories high. The lecturer cast doubts about the claims made in the article. He thinks that it cannot hold lots of people in the great house.
First of all, the author points out that great house were build for residential that can cater to hundreds of families. Also, it is also can be seen that it is similar to large well known apartment building at Taos, Mexico, where many have been seen dwelling on it for nearly centuries. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that on the facade of the building resembles an american building, and the inside depicts that there are few people living on it such as there is few fire place on the room and its large room can only accepts 10 families and so the lecturer reinstated that it could not function as a residential unit.
Secondly, the author contends that the Chaco structure were used to store food supplies like grain maize. The article notes that the grain maize could be a long lasting of food supply to the community due to it could not spoil that easily, and the house can be a great way to store numerous number of bins of food. The author rebuts this argument. She suggests that there are no evidence to support there are presence of grain maize on the house when the excavation took place. She elaborates on this by mentioning that there are no large container seen on the building.
Finally, the author states that Pueblo Alto were used as ceremonial center in the community. The article establishes that on the excavations archaelogists found a numerous number of broken pots. This pots revealed that people used it for gatherings. At the ceremonies, they used the pots in every meal they served and this ceremonies are known for Native American Culture. The lecture, on the hand, posits that there are large heaps of building materials like sand, stones, gravel. She puts forth the idea that there are numerous trash left behind by the construction worker and there are no signs of ceremonies that took place as being talked about in the reading passage.
