Work policy
The lecture and the reading are both about the policy of changing a five-day workweek to a four-day workweek. Whereas the reading explains some benefits of that policy, the lecture points out some disadvantages. The lecture casts doubt the main points of the reading by providing three reasons.
First, according to the reading that policy may increase the profits by assuming that with this policy, the workers would feel more rested; in addition, the company may hire more staff. So, the company would not have to pay neither for additional error costs nor for overworking load. However, the lecture disputes this point. The lecturer argues that by adding more staff, the company have to pay the same benefits (insurance and others) whether the person works four or five days per week. In addition, the company needs more space and computers for the new employees. Hence, the corporation will have fewer profits with the new policy.
Second, according to the reading, with that policy the country as a whole may reduce the unemployed rate since the companies will require more people. Nevertheless, the lecture refutes this point. The speaker mentions that the companies may have the same amount of workers without hiring new people. Moreover, the employees will overwork to solve the company´s needs. Therefore, this policy will not reduce the employee rate in the country.
Finally, the reading points out that workers would have more free time to themselves. In the other hand, the lecture points out that this free time may result in decreasing the ability of the workers. In addition, this may produce the workers to lose their job or to lose the posibility to be awarded or promoted because the companies would prefer a five day- worker instead of a four day-worker.
In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture both discusses a new work policy, the main points made in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
