The chart below shows estimated world literacy rates by region and by gender for the year 2000.
The bar graph compares the percentage of illiteracy among both genders in six regions over the year 2000.
Overall, it is clear that in Asia and Africa were the most unlearned nations, whereas in developed contries the rate was the lowest. According to the genders, in every part of the world females were more literate than males.
To begin with, in South Asia the iliteracy was highest for both men and women, making up about 35 and 55 per cent, respectively. Then, in Arab States and Sub-Saharan Africa the figures were very similar, accounting for nearly, 52% and 49% for females, accordingly; however in Arab males were more literate, at 28 and 31 percent. The contrast of illiterate males and females in East Asia/ Oceania was the biggest in the chart, as there were just over twice more unlettered women than men(20% and roughly 10%).
Around 10 and 12 per cent of males and females were illiterate in Latin America/Caribbean in 2000. But in Developed countries the percentage of illiteracy was the lowest, consisting of almost zero for dominating gender and only 2% for women.
