Living in a country when you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is argued that there would be not only social but also practical issues caused by living abroad. While I think that several unexpected misunderstandings might lead to severe social challenges for foreigners, I hold a firm belief that technology breakthoughs can help them manage to live conveniently.
The main reasons for social problems could be culture and language barriers. Obviously, foreigners who are not able to speak native languages of countries they travel to seemingly find it difficult to exchange information, especially in some countries that English is unpopular. Even though body language is probably used, misinterpretation could cause numerous undesirable situations. Also, some people might even feel offended because of culture differences. For example, while in America or Western countries, shaking hands when meeting business partners is usually meant as a warm welcome, it is considered as an aggressive sign in The Phillipines. Therefore, residents from overseas countries appear to fail to communicate effectively, and it’s possible they be isolated among community as a result.
However, with the development of technology and popularity of English, practical problems for people living overseas can be tackled quickly. The first example worth mentioning is searching for directions. With some basic English and a smartphone connected to the internet, finding ways within any city on the world has never been easier. Besides, online shopping has become increasingly prevalent that goods from food to furniture can be effortlessly ordered on websites such as Foodpanda and Amazon. Furthermore, nowadays, locations are less important for work choices because people can choose to work from home.
In conclusion, although I agree that differences in languages and cultures can bring about a variety of disadvantages, I believe that people could take advantages of advanced technology to ease the difficulties when living in a foreign country.
