Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.
What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?
Nowadays, large number of universities offer both technical and non technical course through out the world. It is a debatable issue that whether education at university level should be work-oriented or general studies. In my opinion, it should provide education needed in the workplace for the betterment of the students.
To start with, In this competitive world, work-oriented courses has become a necessity because of increase population and decreased number of jobs. It would be definitely better if universities offer education which the employer demands. On the other side, if university education would be limited to general knowledge than graduates had to enroll explicitly for professional training or had to pursue post-graduate courses in order to grab a job, hence it would be extremely expensive. In short, what is the use of education, which do not provide skills and knowledge to work and earn your living.
Also , students enroll themselves in university education to gain professional knowledge so as to combat the unemployment and other critical issues of the life. As they already gained the basic education at school level, learning again the similar courses at university level would not be a wise decision. Moreover, it would be useless to spent three to four years for college studies, instead it would be more beneficial to join some professional training or internship to make ourselves skillful and efficient.
In conclusion, Universities are the most responsible institutions of the society, which should prepare students as competent for the job-world. Therefore in my opinion, the courses learned by graduates at the college should be completely work-oriented.
