The reading and the lecture both discuss the impact a professor appearing on the TV has. However, they both completely contradict each other. The author of the reading believes professors appearing on TV has many benefits. The lecturer challenges this statement and is of the opinion that they only have disadvantages.
First of all, the author suggests that professors can acquire a respectable reputation in their respective fields by appearing on TV as it can reach a broad range of audience. The argument is challenged by the lecturer. She says by appearing on TV the professor can lose his reputation in his academic circle as he would appear as someone who is more concerned about popularity rather than actual research. Furthermore, she argues this can have bad effects as that professor might not be invited to professors meeting and gets completely alienated.
Secondly, the writer contends that even the university could benefit from this appearance. As more people will become aware of the university which will help in getting more funding as well as more applications. The lecturer, nonetheless, rebuts this assertion by saying that because the professor would have to spend a lot of time working on what he will say on TV, traveling, etc he wouldn't be able to take classes which will only affect the universities students.
Finally, it is stated in the article that the public will also gain knowledge from the professors' appearance. The author establishes that viewers normally don't have any contact will such experts in their normal life thus their presence on TV will give them a chance to learn from them. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that most of the TV companies are not interested in the depth of the subject rather they only discuss topics superficially which can be easily represented by the TV reporter. Thus the professor doesn't provide any significant value by appearing on TV.
