The table below describes the number of employees and factories in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
The table gives information about how many men and women were employed in factories in England and Wales over a 40 year period (1851-1891) of 10 year interval.
Overall, more males were employed over the period than females except in 1861. Also, the greatest number of personnel was employed in 1851, while the least amount was recorded in 1901. There were the highest number of factories in 1881 and the least in 1851.
In 1851, the number of employed men far exceeded that of women with 97,100 personnel at 287,100 and 190,000 respectively. Similarly, from 1871 to 1891, the difference narrowed with 20,000 to 26,000. Furthermore,at he end of the period the difference became insignificant with 31,000 males and 30,000 females employed. In comparison, the number of females employed in 1861 was considerably greater than males, while the figure for the former stood high at 160,000, the latter was about 130,000 lower at 131,780.
In terms of factories, the highest figure of 721 was noted in 1881, whereas in 1871, 1891 and 1901, the total number of factories revolve around 600 to 625. However the least number of factories was recorded in 1851 and 1861 at 225 and 227 respectively.
